CL provided unswerving support, guidance and commitment to our son throughout his HSC journey. CL’s level of commitment goes beyond the tutoring hours – he really commits to the person as a whole. CL is more than a tutor and provided real mentorship to our son. His tutoring style was a good match. Our son’s least favourite subject is Maths and CL helped our son to commit and achieve the mark he needed to get into the degree he aspired to. The support that Vanessa (CL’s specialist English tutor) provided in English Extension was also great and highly effective. We would highly recommend CL and his team to any parents.

Maths coaching by Dr Chin Liang Beh is a holistic delivery which you can be assured of is more than just priming your child for the Higher School Certificate. He engages with your child and discovers their weaknesses, teaches them how to overcome them and above all teaches them how to control the environment and not let the environment control them. We were lucky enough to find CL through a friend. Our daughter Gemma thrived under his tutelage and more than achieved her personal academic goals. CL was more than a Mathematics tutor to Gemma, he was a wonderful role model in many aspects of life. His discipline and his pursuit of excellent, coupled with an unmatched work ethic, was inspirational to Gemma. This benefitted her study in all her HSC subjects. Her results were outstanding. Chin-Liang tutored our daughter Franny in Mathematics for her HSC year. He is an incredibly dedicated and thorough teacher who is very generous with his time and passionate about teaching but who also demands a total commitment to study from his students. Franny enjoyed her sessions with CL and CL’s relaxed but thorough approach to outlining and reinforcing the principles of Mathematics enabled her to build confidence in her skills and to go into the exams feeling solid in her preparation. Her marks definitely improved from her work with CL and she achieved a very good result in the HSC.

My daughter participated in the Accelerated Advanced Mathematics program at St Scholastica’s College the first year it was made available.  She was considering not continuing with the program, feeling that she had missed some of the basics and wasn’t keeping up. CL commenced working with her from the beginning of 2011 – meeting 1-2 times per week and providing lots of support via email. As a result, my daughter’s study habits changed. CL’s conviction that Maths is about questions, and that the more questions you answer the better you get makes it achievable to get the results you are after. He also engaged in her other interests, and was incredibly generous with his time and resources. Throughout this time, I noticed that my daughter’s aspirations changed.  CL challenged her thinking, and though the relationship was not always smooth, but he made an enormous difference.  My daughter achieved her goal of a HSC Band 6 in Advanced Mathematics and we all acknowledge the significant contribution that CL made to achieving that result.

My son had been struggling with Advanced Mathematics for a couple of years when CL was recommended to us. CL worked on not just his Maths, but his approach to study, his work ethic, his attitude and his lifestyle. They bumped heads along the way but CL never gave up on him. The improvement in all quarters was profound and ended with a great 2 unit Advanced Maths result in the HSC. I would suggest that anyone having difficulties get in touch with CL – the sooner the better!

CL came highly recommended by another family at school (Loreto Kirribilli), whose daughter had achieved significant acceleration in 2 Unit Advanced Mathematics within a short time under CL’s tuition. From the moment CL stepped in the door I knew that he was the right tutor for my daughter, taking her back to basics and bringing her up to a strong standard in a subject where she had struggled previously in the lead up to her HSC year. Much of CL’s focus was not just on building her mathematical skills through repeated exercises, revision and online email support but he balanced this with genuine though matter-of-fact words of encouragement to build up her confidence to overcome her dislike of this subject; reframing her thinking and attitude to successfully meet the challenges of the subject – and she did! She will now use this knowledge at university where she will commence a Commerce/Law degree. CL was also able to arrange additional tuition for my daughter in her Advanced English studies. Her tutor Natalie was able to engage in a very relaxed and friendly manner. Having to juggle work and other younger children, I found it most helpful as tuition occurred in the privacy of our home at a mutually convenient time. It was also valuable to receive weekly written feedback on my daughter’s progress and homework tasks.

Overall I have valued CL’s mentoring of my daughter who worked very hard to achieve her results. CL’s professionalism, availability and loyalty to his students and families have allowed us to share an ongoing friendship with him especially as we similarly value the gift of education so highly.

My son started tutoring with CL late in 2009. At that time, Francesco was failing Year 11 Advanced Maths at school. In the past, we did have other tutors but the results were never there. Finally I found CL and could tell from the moment we first spoke that he was simply different and most importantly his passion and drive in helping students came shining through.

Well, my feelings were right! He turned my son around…Francesco started looking forward to his sessions with CL and finally he was seeing results in his school exams. Francesco did very well in his 2010 HSC Advanced Maths and I know this would never have happened if it were not for CL. CL is not only an extraordinarily good Maths tutor but one of the finest, most inspiring human beings I have come across. As an educationalist he has a rare magic. His insight into each student’s aspirations and approach to life is the source of his amazing ability to motivate. He has high standards, expects a lot and, generally, gets it. My daughter began Maths coaching with CL after a difficult year due to illness. Maths was her least favourite subject and her worst but, with CL’s help, it soon became one of her best. Dear CL, I greatly valued your wonderful tutoring of Lotte and have written a few heartfelt words in my appreciation. The HSC can be a very stressful time for parents as well as students. Having a dedicated, conscientious and caring tutor like Chin- Liang kept our daughter Lotte focused and accountable which meant that as parents we could stop the nagging about study and be supportive to her emotional and physical needs. My daughter’s Maths grades had been significantly dropping so we thought tutoring might help. With CL’s aid, her HSC grades improved more than 25% over 6 months. CL started tutoring my twin daughters Kate and Tess in HSC Mathematics in 2008 when they were in Year 11. I soon learnt that this was no ordinary tutor. Whether calling them to stay focused on their work or suggestions to help them make it through the HSC generally, CL demonstrated a willingness to go well beyond the level of care that most tutors would show and a creativeness in finding ways to keep them motivated. CL worked with our daughter Olivia from late 2007 and throughout 2008, primarily to assist her in her preparation for the Mathematics component of the Higher School Certificate.

During Year 11 Olivia was working through which subjects she wanted to concentrate on for the HSC. We were attempting to help her where we could, but we both felt that for Maths, we were not able to offer the insight and support she needed. We decided to seek some help for Olivia in this area and CL was recommended to us by a friend. Following an initial meeting with CL, Olivia clearly felt comfortable working with him, and we also felt confident in his approach. We saw in CL a committed and talented teacher with a holistic approach to understanding Mathematics in the context of a wide and fascinating world. During Year 12 Olivia decided to include Maths in her final subject choices for the HSC. She worked with CL on a weekly basis all the way through to the final exams. It is very difficult to find a tutor when you need one. My daughter found Chin Liang on the internet, and arranged for a meeting to find out the services he has got. I was skeptical at first, especially with the strange name like Powdermonkey! From that meeting on, everything became very good and easy. Jessica was drawn to the subjects she was having some difficulties with. She was absorbed with the knowledge she was

Our daughter Marlee received Maths tutoring from CL of Powdermonkey Academics for three years. She also received tutoring for English and Biology for the HSC. Powdermonkey was great for Marlee, in that she developed her skills and confidence along the journey. Her results in all three subjects improved and went beyond improved performance. During this period, she developed better study and organisational capacities. One could see an increase in her confidence in these subjects and school work in general increased. CL was my daughter Virginia’s tutor for her HSC year in 2007. CL tutored Virginia in both Biology and Maths. I found CL to be an excellent, considerate but fair tutor, communicating consistently with both Virginia and myself regarding learning and progress in the individual subjects. CL was always reliable, interested and always available to tutor in and out of tutoring times by phone and e-mail. Back in 2004 when my elder son wanted one-on-one tutoring, CL responded to a notice I posted at Sydney University looking for a tutor. I was impressed with CL’s ‘talk’ to him and the difference it made to his attitude to study. Although CL offered no guaranteed results, my elder son attained high HSC results and was admitted into Sydney University the following year.

In 2007, well into the first term and approaching HSC Trials, I contacted CL to tutor my younger son, Adrian. CL was candid about Adrian’s academic situation and offered to ‘talk’ to him. Since that time, Adrian made continuous progress in every
subject and all his teachers commented about the huge improvements in his HSC Trial results. The support and feedback CL regularly gave Adrian was very helpful and the group sessions exposed Adrian to other students with a similar learning approach. I also appreciated CL updating parents when he responded to Adrian’s queries.

Adrian was very pleased with his high HSC results based on hard work and also the mentoring received from CL. He is expecting to attend university this year.

CL is an excellent tutor and mentor as evidenced by both our sons’ HSC results and I have no hesitation in recommending him to any parent or student who is looking for a positive approach to study.

I would like to commend CL to anyone seeking a Maths tutor. He’s great. My daughter Natalie completed her 2007 HSC and her results were excellent. I cannot praise him enough except to say that I believe that, with his guidance, Natalie fulfilled her potential. Don’t expect a soft touch, because he is demanding and uplifting and inspiring. Our third daughter is in Year 10 and is currently seeking CL for Maths and Science, and she is improving steadily.

I have known CL for a period of four years. During that time he was my daughter Antonia’s tutor in both Maths and Science. His mentoring of Antonia was of great benefit. Subsequently Antonia received outstanding results and will commence studies at Sydney University in 2008. CL has been a great support to both myself and my family and continues to be a close friend. I have no hesitation in providing this reference and I feel sure that whatever path that CL takes success can only follow.

In Mid-2006 I sought a Biology tutor for my daughter Alexandra/Spike who needed assistance with her HSC course work. After contacting Sydney University I was put in touch with Chin Liang or CL as he is more well known by. An initial tutoring session was arranged with Spike and CL to ‘test the waters’ as they say.

In short it went well. From my perspective it went extremely well as in addition to gaining pure academic instruction my daughter gained support, encouragement and, thus, confidence. Over time we added Mathematics to the equation.

The transformation of Alexandra was quite remarkable to watch. Homework and study suddenly became a routine feature when once they were non existent. Tutoring seemed to become almost the equivalent of a social outing. Something that was pleasurable and rewarding.

In the end, as a parent, we do gauge success by the results. In my daughter’s case there is no doubt that her HSC results were vastly improved. This occurred not only in the said tutored subjects but across the board. CL’s influence impacted her total approach. Looking forward I think he has instilled an approach to learning and study that will assist her with the rigours of university life. I would have no hesitation in
recommending CL to any student or parent looking for a tutor.

CL is one of those rare people who has the gift of teaching. He teaches his students how to learn and not what to learn. My daughter had been failing Mathematics and Chemistry in the first half of Year 11 so I decided to have her tutored. The initial tutors we engaged didn’t work out and then CL came into our lives. After his first session with Aimee, CL was able to work out where she was going wrong and then took her back to the basics. As the year progressed, Aimee’s results started to improve which gave her the motivation to work harder. Things started to click with her and Maths became easier and not a chore.

CL was tough on her and knew when and how to push her to get the results. CL wasn’t just a Maths tutor. He became my daughter’s tutor, mentor and friend and his teaching methods and guidance influenced all other areas of her life, both at school and in life. The skills she has learnt from CL she will carry with her for the rest of her life. He also gave his valuable time outside of tutoring if she ever had problems either through a phone call or by email. If she had questions throughout the week, he would promptly reply.

Leading towards the Trials and HSC exams, we also needed help with Chemistry and English. CL arranged tutors for us in these subjects as well and these tutors helped my daughter immensely. Lloyd, Clem and Julian were also there for her in support and are wonderful, caring people.

The one great quality of CL and his tutors is that they don’t promise or guarantee your student will get a certain grade. This works well because their approach takes away the expectations of the parents from their child. It is quite amazing because my daughter’s results far outweighed any expectation we might have inwardly had for her.

I would recommend CL and his group of tutors to anybody who wants tutoring for their child because you get much more than just a tutor…you get a wonderful friend for both your daughter and yourself.

It is hard to articulate the changes CL wrought in my daughter – from being disorganized, disinterested and disengaged she became a motivated, enthusiastic and focused teenager (surely an oxymoron!). I even watched with mute amazement as she blithely raced off to Maths and Biology tutorials with CL…even now there’s an almost dreamlike quality in the scenario. I can say with absolute certainty that had we not had the good fortune to have encountered CL, Spike’s results would not have been the same and she would not now be attending Orientation week at Sydney University!

Using the immortal words, ‘but wait there’s more’… it’s not just the academic results. CL has a knack of reaching out to teenagers and the rare ability to be able to pass on his experiences in a way they simply would not accept from any other adult… especially a parent!

What more can I say except to thank CL without reservation and, just when he thought it was safe to go out again, to let him know I have another child who needs him now……

We found CL to be an excellent tutor and role model for our son completing his Year 12. CL encouraged self-discipline, set goals and helped our son to gain confidence in the subject and ultimately achieve results. This was done in a self-effacing and respectful manner. Dear Chin-Liang, thank you for the kind words both about Juan, and also about ‘the parents’. As we’ve discussed before, it’s ironic how well qualified one can be for one’s job and yet be a total amateur for the infinitely harder and more important role of being a parent! There is no doubt that the boy I dropped off this morning for his Biology exam is in very different person from the one who sat around our dining-room table on the Saturday morning in January when you first met him. Of course he was always delightful and a pain in the arse at the same time (neither of those have changed!) but his focus, his diligence, his confidence in what he is capable of and his newfound appreciation of the value of education have blown us away.

Who knows, this may have all happened anyway, but Jenny and I are totally convinced that it has happened because of your great work with him. As you know, this is not just your technical expertise, but your personal approach and the relationship you have formed with him. We are extremely grateful and, importantly, so is he.

Powdermonkey: the person who provides the fuel to set off an explosion! An apt description of the dynamic man who began this fabulous tutoring/mentoring service.

A student willing to give a commitment to learning in this very supportive (yet fun) environment will see their marks explode rapidly upwards. This is not a service for a student who thinks once a week tutoring will be enough, but rather they will be challenged to be responsible for their own understanding and learning.

Following Amber’s first lesson, she became fully absorbed and came away confident that Advanced Maths was actually achievable. In just six months Amber’s results have changed from the very poor to achieving high passes, and unbelievably to us she looks forward to each exam. Our daughter having already made her career choice, has decided to take a higher HSC Maths level to achieve her goals. Part of this strategy will of course involve Powdermonkey’s help.

It is no coincidence that the main Powdermonkey, Chin-Liang, works in Biological Sciences, as quite obviously he has mastered the ability to clone himself. We truly believe that you are in fact at least a triplet. No one man could personally achieve so much and yet is always so willing to give his time to students and all he meets. Chin Liang strode into our son’s life at the beginning of Year 12. He helped him transform himself from a reluctant student to a conscientious, (almost) enthusiastic learner who understood the value of a good education and the importance of being well prepared for his HSC.

Chin Liang not only provided our son with tutoring in Maths and Biology (and found a King Lear expert to help him with last minute coaching for his English exams), but also instilled in him a respect for education; something we had been struggling with for a while. His novel and sometimes rugged approach (which included a few rounds of kick boxing when our son’s interest and energy were flagging) stimulated him, focused him and kept him engaged. Chin Liang was also able to say a lot of things that our son had stopped hearing from us.
Our only regret is that we didn’t know about Chin Liang in Year 11 when his impact would have even been more dramatic.

We commend Chin Liang to any parents whose children need tutoring and focusing.

If tenacity and perseverance with students was a subject, Chin-Liang would be at the top of his class. We have had our two daughters involved in the Powdermonkey Academics programme for quite a while and the quiet but firm persistence with which he has guided both of them, one up to and through her HSC, and the other through the junior secondary years, has been commendable, praiseworthy and achieved results.

By pulling no punches and giving his students a sometimes harsh slice of reality in his regular communication via e mail, he achieves two things. He shows his commitment and dedication to his students, and he makes sure that they are all aware and up to the challenge that he presents to them.

A tutoring session with Chin-Liang is not just a learning experience, it is a life experience!

Writing about Chin Liang as a parent of one of his students is easy in terms of describing the change I saw in my son and his attitude to learning. What’s much harder is to describe exactly how that transformation took place.

We contacted CL about some Maths coaching after seeing one of his flyers and were definitely wary after meeting with other tutors who had come across as either patronising or phoney. My son had been avoiding studying, and avoiding acknowledging that he was doing so. I was worried that he was beginning to rationalise his avoidance and say that it didn’t matter, he didn’t have to work at Maths, etc. and I noticed him getting angry whenever the subject was raised.

Within a matter of days as I recall CL had established a way of working with him that was utterly focussed, humourous, respectful and at the same time, tough. Most importantly, I believe, my son took on board the fact that that studying was completely his own responsibility and that CL was looking to see if he could rise to the challenge. He began to want to do more than the bare minimum required and to want to do well. He began to experience the pleasure of understanding the material, and of knowing he was making progress through his efforts (and those of CL!!) and getting better marks. This realisation of course affected other areas of study as he ran up to the HSC.

Chin-Liang was enormously patient, professional, committed and hard working, and particularly so as the exams came closer. I genuinely believe that my son’s experience of the whole HSC would have been very different if CL had not been there, and that through CL’s Maths coaching he has in fact leaned something very important about learning in general.

You set high standards of application for our son, you gave him clear explanations and direction, and you helped him improve his performance in Year 12 Mathematics substantially. We could not have wished for a better Maths tutor for Alfred. Chin-Liang educated him in the truest sense of the word. He led Alfred out of his Mathematical quagmire, and his marks shot up after only a few weeks tutoring. CL’s varied life experience added greatly to his teaching methodology.

We have known Chin-Liang for a period of over 12 months in which he coached our son Sam in Maths for his Higher School Certificate. Chin-Liang’s contribution was invaluable to Sam. CL’s friendly and open personality made the lessons relaxed, and through this Sam gained confidence. I personally find Chin Liang very committed, punctual and knowledgeable as a Maths tutor for my daughter. He has the ability to extend the student to their fullest potential by giving them self confidence. Chin Liang in my opinion treats each student as individuals and tailors to their needs.

Chin-Liang tutored our daughter during her HSC year of high school. Whilst Prue was performing well in some subjects she seemed to lack consistency and a confident grasp of some of the rules that are applied in Mathematics. She often did poorly, that is below average, in her Maths assessments and exams. We hired Chin-Liang in the hope that he would give her the confidence and fill in the gaps of her knowledge. The time we hired Chin-Liang was late in the year and we were concerned whether he would have the time to accomplish his task. Prue achieved a mark of 85% in her HSC Maths exam and exceeded our expectations. We believe that her success is, in large measure, due to Chin-Liang’s tutoring. She certainly became more confident during the year and clearly developed a much better understanding of how to approach Maths problems. Without Chin-Liang, we believe she would have been looking at a mark in the high sixties or low seventies.

My daughter Nathalie has been receiving private tutoring in Maths since Year 6. She now attends Year 11. Although she is a high achiever in most of her subjects, with Maths…she simply never liked. Our experience with several tutors from Year 6 to 9 paved the way for our expectations for private tuition, that in general terms equated to: a one hour lesson each time to help with questions from school homework, extra lessons one week before examination (desperation tactic), and at the end of the school year, a ‘Thank you and see you next year.’

The fairy godmother brought CL to us in February 2001, when Nathalie started Year 10. At this time her results averaged 54%. With Chin-Liang there was an instant switch of roles. Nathalie was no longer in control!! Chin-Liang first interviewed her to decide whether he would accept her as his student, i.e. if she was serious about learning. He then advised her of his strict regime and expectations of her, which included homework that he would give her in addition to schoolwork, continuous interaction during the week for any questions she might have. and the unbelievable!! Homework that he would give her during school holidays!

Of course there were teething problems in the beginning . after all you don’t give up one’s leadership without a fight! But CL simply refused to tutor her unless she complied. Comply she did, and for her School Certificate she achieved 80% in Advanced Mathematics. Most importantly is the fact that although she achieved higher marks in other subjects, Maths was the one she was the most proud of. Chin-Liang has taught her more than Maths, he has taught her that she can do anything she wants if she puts in the effort.

Chin Liang has brought a freshness to learning for our boy, Tom. He has renewed his enthusiasm, and helped him focus and set goals. Most importantly, he has made learning fun so that Tom looks forward to each session. Between each session he frequently emails Chin Liang to get immediate feedback so he can try new strategies with challenging tasks. He’s making great progress.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to recommend Chin Liang, fondly called ‘CL’, as a tutor. Our son, Matthew, began tutoring lessons with Chin Liang in Year 10 earlier this year. Through Chin Liang as a teacher and mentor, Matthew established a more appropriate regime for problem solving and studying, and was introduced to essential texts for revision. Towards the end of 2001, with CL’s guidance, Matthew also embarked on Year 11 Mathematics. With renewed confidence, Matthew obtained excellent results in Mathematics, and also excelled in all subjects undertaken in the School Certificate. Dear Chin-Liang, once again, thank you for all the assistance and encouragement you’ve provided Carla this past year, in so well achieving her ‘Maths focus’. The family appreciates your dedication to your work and the significant contributions made on the part of yourself. You’d know by now just how very well Carla did in her HSC. We were particularly pleased that she excelled in both the Humanities and Mathematics, which is very unusual; as you know, most students don’t achieve this. I know Carla responded positively to your very cooperative and flexible approach to tutoring her. Your preparedness to field questions via e-mail meant that Carla didn’t have to wait until her next session in attempting to get her mind around the ‘current problem’. I also think that your ‘contemporary approach’ was invaluable, whereby Carla and you developed good rapport at the personal level, meaning no generation gap existed, which can often occur between mentor and student, and inhibit the learning process. Mary and I are very pleased with the assistance you’ve provided and similarly seek that other anxious students also benefit from your mentorship.

Chin Liang has been a Mathematics tutor to our daughter Natasha for the first term of this year, and my wife and I have been most impressed with his efforts. Natasha’s grades have improved noticeably since CL has been assisting her. Chin Liang has shown a great ability to communicate and his teaching skills have helped Natasha attain a better grasp of the subject. He is courteous and attentive, and shows great interest in Natasha’s progress. We have hired several tutors for our daughter, but Chin Liang is by far the most professional and effective.

Chin Liang has now tutored three of our children in Mathematics. Our eldest son Michael, was quite lost to say the least with this subject. Chin Liang has helped Michael achieve the highest mark in his year for Standard Mathematics with a formal award being presented to him by the school principal. Chin Liang’s enthusiasm for his students is plentiful as is his patience and we have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone.

We have no doubt whatsoever that the contribution Chin Liang made to Tim’s self-confidence and overall performance levels in the subject was significant, and the results started to come through within a short period of weeks. Tim’s final result in his HSC Mathematics was a good 25% up on any of his previous assessments. Chin Liang’s style is professional, disciplined and firm; at the same time his manner is relaxed, enthusiastic and seemingly very compelling. Nick, being in Year 9 and requiring tuition for what we felt were slightly different reasons from those of Tim, is testimony to the fact that Chin Liang’s style and approach are equally effective with younger children. Interest levels were maintained with the boys at all times. The sessions instilled work disciplines that neither would have acquired otherwise and added efficiencies to the individual pupils that were being tutored at any one period. Chin Liang regularly ran group sessions between similarly streamed classmates and thus was able to build a sense of teamwork to the process of mathematical problem solving. We’re grateful for Chin Liang’s input, and would recommend him without reservation.

We highly recommend Chin Liang, who has coached my children for over two years – and will continue to do so (hopefully!) till they both finish their HSC. My son went from Intermediate Mathematics to Advanced level in just over four months – both maintain high levels now.
