“I am incredibly grateful for the guidance and support of my Maths tutor CL, who played a pivotal role in both my academic success and personal growth. Before starting tutoring, I struggled with Maths, often feeling overwhelmed, leaving myself with emotions of doubt, believing that the subject Mathematics just wasn’t for me. However, very quickly CL understood the most optimal way for me to understand mathematical problems. With CL’s patient teaching methods, clear explanations, and logical solutions, my confidence in the subject has grown immensely.

Previously, throughout high school Maths was my worst subject with low marks and an occasional pass. With CL’s assistance my Maths results improved significantly, and I began to approach problems with a newfound sense of enthusiasm and understanding, resulting in Maths being one of my best subjects throughout my final years of schooling.

Beyond academics, CL has also been a mentor, offering valuable advice and support in various aspects of life. Tutoring taught me not only Maths concepts but also the importance of logical thinking, problem-solving, and self-discipline. CL’s belief in my abilities from the beginning has motivated me to push beyond my limits and break down problems systematically to work clearly for the best solution.

I always found CL’s constant genuine passion for teaching and his ability to connect with me and other students on a personal level to make tutoring sessions enjoyable and fun. CL’s patience, kindness, and ability to make even the most complex topics easy to understand have made a lasting impact on me. I can confidently say that his guidance as a tutor and mentor has shaped me into a more capable and determined person.

CL also taught me the concepts of human habits, and how we can use these human characteristics to our advantage to become more consistent and reliable, which I have adapted to life outside of my academics.

I highly recommend CL to anyone looking to improve their Maths skills and wanting a mentor who truly cares about their success. I am forever grateful for CL and his support, as well as the positive influence he has had on both my academic journey and personal development.”

“I enjoyed tutoring with CL as his approach to Maths made me understand key aspects that were difficult to see before, such as conceptual factors. I felt that understanding the concepts of Math came to me more easily, and even now I can see the impacts of CL’s teaching as I undertake my current studies. He approached every session with friendliness and encouragement, and I felt like I was in an environment where I wasn’t judged, which I had feared before. I believe I have learnt a lot not just about Maths theories, but also the approach to understanding Maths which has helped me immensely in my current studies.”

“Throughout my 3 year journey with CL as my tutor he has helped me not only with Mathematics, but also with my life. He has taught me how to be more responsible, to want to strive to achieve goals, and to be more honest with myself. Since the day I started, CL was always by my side for all my Maths problems, ensuring that by the end of the lesson I was sure to understand my issues. Alongside Maths, CL also helped me study for PDHPE! Although CL was my tutor and was extremely successful in improving my grades, he also excelled at keeping me honest with my studies, teaching me about good life habits and sharing good insights about what lies ahead of me in the future. By the end of my tutoring experience with CL we had built a great bond, had many great sessions together and I was always excited to go to sessions!.

“CL was an exceptional tutor during my undergraduate degree. He was incredibly focused and demonstrated not only a deep understanding of the content but also an impressive ability to teach it – a skill that goes beyond simply knowing the material. What set him apart was how much he genuinely cared about his students. He poured his heart into his work, approaching teaching with a level of dedication and passion rarely seen. For him, it wasn’t just a matter of fulfilling job requirements; his commitment made it clear that he truly loved what he did. His enthusiasm for teaching rivalled some of the most decorated professors at Sydney University’s School of Medicine and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital when they speak about the subjects they are passionate about, and pass on their knowledge to the next generation of doctors.

“Having CL as a Maths tutor was a vital anchor for me throughout my HSC year. There were countless times I would enter a session or a question stressing and spiralling about my lack of knowledge, and each time CL was nothing but patient, understanding and soothing as he assured me it was totally chill. His teaching method of delivering the information clearly and practically worked great for me, as doing actual questions allowed me to build skills I needed for the questions. His patience and ability to meet me where I was really pulled me up for Advanced Maths, leaving me satisfied with my marks.

Beyond the Maths teaching though, perhaps the thing I will most remember about CL is his kindness, calmness, and approach to life. He met me at a human level, assuring me that everything was going to be okay, and to not stress myself out too much. He chatted about things outside of Maths and school, and showed me his genuine interest in my life, and his best wishes for me. All in all, having CL as my Advanced Maths tutor was one of the best choices for my HSC and overall last year at high school, and I will always cherish his help and smiles..”

“Before I met CL I had been through several tutors, with none of them able to help me and had just about given up on doing well in Advanced Maths. CL started tutoring me a few nights before one of my prelim exams and even in those few days, my ability increased, and I even passed my exam that I was sure I was going to fail.

At first, I didn’t really like or understand CL’s tutoring method as it was different from any other method that previous tutors had used, however I quickly realised that the short and consistent sessions were much more beneficial than long sessions. CL’s up front and very honest approach to teaching really allowed me to improve in such a short time and helped me to stay on track.  I had little confidence in my ability when CL first started tutoring me but through encouragement and in-depth explanation that made me work to figure out the answers, I became more confident in myself. Without this encouragement I highly doubt I would’ve done as well as I did in Advanced Maths.

Thanks to CL’s help I was able to achieve the mark I wanted in my maths HSC! I highly recommend his tutoring services as he goes above and beyond in every session to help you achieve your goal.”

“I have had the privilege of being taught by CL starting in Year 8 up until my final HSC exams (2022). To say that CL has been a big help is merely an understatement. Over these past few years, CL has not only helped me to improve my Maths, PDHPE and Geography marks, but he has taught me life skills, guiding me to become a more driven and passionate learner. Before starting with CL, I was greatly struggling with Maths in particular. I had little confidence and hope left in the subject, leading me to have failed multiple exams. Despite spending hours attempting to study Maths, it was ineffective as I now realise I wasn’t actually understanding what it was that I was trying to learn. However, with the help of CL’s tutoring style, my mindset behind the way I learn and study has changed completely.

His direct, yet tailored approach to tutoring truly demonstrates his genuine care in getting to know all of his students as he adopts a style of teaching that will best suit their personality and individual learning needs. I have yet to come across a teacher like CL, as for each subject, he breaks down concepts to ensure their simplicity and drills the importance of repetition and consistency. In Maths and PDHPE, for example, we have focused on mastering the fundamentals and piecing them together in order to understand more complex concepts and equations. As well as this, CL always accompanied each concept with simple diagrams to aid my visual style of learning and help me to gain the most out of each tutoring session. Over the years, I have seen my results and rankings improve drastically. With CL’s help, I achieved an ATAR of 95.10 which has allowed me to secure a position at the Australian National University, to study a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Commerce double degree. As well as this, I was also able to achieve 1st in the year for multiple internal exams, 2nd in the year overall for Geography and PDHPE, 7th in the year overall for Maths and 35th out of 160 as my Year 12 school ranking. To put into perspective how drastically CL’s teaching has helped me, before I began with him, I had previous rankings of last in the year for Maths and a consistent year level ranking between 80th – 100th in my year group.

I would highly recommend CL for not only his vast level of expertise, but also as a mentor who always has his students’ best interest at heart. Not only is he always present during our tutoring sessions, but he encourages me to call him when I need help, to send him problem questions (any and all!) and recommended the best workbooks and study guides to aid my learning. I feel as though CL has helped me to mature greatly; improving not only my exam results but my attitude to learning as well. I am very confident that I will carry much of what CL has taught me into university and throughout life.”

“I first met with CL in March of my HSC year. After a bit of tough love with me forgetting a calculator for the first 2 sessions, we were straight into it and I knew that he would be the perfect tutor for me. CL’s strategy is based on making sense of how to arrive at the answer, with steps being set for each question. By having these clear steps in place it minimised silly errors, which was one of my bigger problems. He would also ensure that I thought realistically and used common sense when answering questions, which was so simple yet so beneficial. Not only did CL help me in my Maths journey, but he also provided me with great advice about university that I greatly appreciate. CL made me enjoy going to tutoring – with the perfect mix between a couple of jokes and serious work. Without CL I would not have been able to achieve a band 6 in Maths. I cannot thank and recommend CL enough – he is the best tutor you’ll ever find !! Thanks for everything again CL – you’re the best !!!!”

“As I reflect on my experience of having CL as a tutor and a mentor throughout my HSC course, four traits of his come to mind; sincerity, blunt honesty, patience and adaptability. His ability to tailor his explanation of complex concepts to my understanding and learning style was second to none. At the beginning of my tuition, my maths homework seemed to be hieroglyphics on a page, but over the years, CL’s guidance allowed me to top my class. CL’s wisdom does not stop at the mathematical, he often offered me guidance in my other subjects, such as Biology and Physics. The best way I can describe CL’s teaching style is a sort of guided train of thought. What I mean by this is that when a certain concept is brought up, he won’t sit you down and lecture you on its intricacies. He will instead ask you what you know already, and repeatedly ask you questions about the concept that seem “one level” above your own understanding, he then guides you through the process of answering the said question, repeating this process again and again until you have mastered the concept. In summary, if you’re looking for a tutor who tolerates no nonsense, but is encouraging and understanding when necessary, it is my firm opinion that you can look no further than CL.”

“My journey through my HSC English course with Ben was one where I was consistently met with obstacles, and Ben was the one to show me the way through the said obstacles. During my high school career, English was always by a mile, my least favorite subject, and my marks reflected this outlook. Halfway through year 11, I started my sessions with Ben. I can wholeheartedly and honestly say that Ben was the best mentor for English that I could have possibly asked for. Ben’s exceptional ability to tutor English stems from his patience, extensive experience in and knowledge of the art of writing, boundless knowledge of the English language, and his genuine passion for the language. Over 1 and a half years of tutoring from Ben, my marks improved by 30%, which I attribute to his ability as a tutor. If you need a tutor for HSC English, I can honestly say that Ben is, in my opinion, your best option. Thank you, Ben.”

“I had gone through several tutors in the space of a couple months before I met CL. I remember being unsure of him and his tutoring style when we first met, but looking back on my journey throughout Year 12 I cannot be happier that he was there by my side. CL is an amazing tutor who not only helped me to better understand mathematical topics, but made it enjoyable! By the end of our time together CL was more of a role model and a friend to me than a tutor, he is a wonderful individual who I am incredibly grateful to have met. His tutoring style is simple yet effective, and thanks to him I got the band result that I wanted. The extent of CL’s help was not limited to high school; after graduation CL helped put me in contact with several key staff (in ecology/biology) at different universities across Sydney meaning I could make an informed decision for my preferences. I can never thank CL enough for everything he has done for me; he’s unlike any other tutor I know of and I highly recommend anyone who is looking for Maths tutoring to consider his service as they will not regret it, I know I don’t!”

“As I sit here trying to compose a testimonial for CL, an individual who has truly changed my life and my perception of life; I find it very difficult to find and combine the right words to properly describe him. CL spontaneously and very kindly agreed to take me on as a student 4 weeks before my final Mathematics HSC exam. I had struggled with my Trials Maths exam, scoring a result of only 48%. I had convinced myself that I would fail HSC Maths. CL and I had daily tutoring sessions consisting of me getting confused every 6 minutes with the whole concept of mathematics but CL kept reassuring me with such mellow and graceful patience. CL is not just a tutor, but a mentor and a friend due to his patience and phenomenal (yet humble) ability to engrain his message and teachings into my brain for the long term. At the end of my final Mathematics HSC exam I had realized that I had actually completed the entire exam paper unlike my attempt in the Trials, and felt extremely confident in myself. When I received my HSC Mathematics result I wasn’t surprised to see that I had scored 76%; I thanked CL immensely as it was due to his willingness and drive to assist me in significantly improving my performance! CL, I hope to keep in touch long into the future and thank you for being such a kind and caring individual person to help me with my struggles.”

“Words can’t describe to how amazing CL is at tutoring. He is a hard working passionate tutor and it is easy to see that. He goes above and beyond to allow you to get the most out of each session teaching in a very unique but effective way. CL tutored me from HSC Trials right up to the night before my Maths and Biology exam and his support and encouragement towards me was incredible. Although there isn’t much time between Trials and the final exams, CL helped me realise how much I can get done and how much I can improve in such a short amount of time, and for that I’m so grateful. CL adapts his teaching methods for the individual’s needs while offering succinct but in-depth explanations – this makes you work for the answer instead of “spoon feeding” answers! CL is straight to the point and will not hold back any comments (negative or positive); which can be daunting at first but in the long run, extremely helpful. CL is without a doubt both an amazing tutor and an amazing friend, I would definitely recommend his services.”

“Words don’t do justice to how amazing CL is as both a tutor and a friend. CL’s support and encouragement for me over the 4 years as his student is almost indescribable. I was an average C/D grade student in every subject when I first started with him in Year 8. In Year 10 it hit me how much of an impact CL’s guidance had on my academic development; when I moved up from the support Maths class to the top class of my Maths pathway and ended up achieving first place in the pathway, all in the same year! Although CL tutored me mainly in Maths and Biology for my Year 11 and 12, his help was not limited to just those two subjects. No subject was a challenge for him! CL always provided assistance for all of my other subjects whether it was a focused tutoring session or a thousand video or article links that he would get to me! Knowing CL for a long period of time it provided me with an amazing support network, not just for my academic development which I appreciated equally, or even more. CL literally shaped my last four years of schooling, with his influence extending beyond my studies. For my HSC I achieved a 91.4 ATAR with 91 in Maths (coming 6th place in my Maths cohort), as well as a score of 85 in Biology! I wouldn’t have been able to make it through all those years of schooling without CL, and if he wasn’t there, I would be a much different person to who I am today. I admire his passion for knowledge and his passion for helping his students to do the best they can do with the effort they can put in. I hope I can radiate the same passion in my career in the future. Thank you CL!”

“Here is my testimonial CL! As much as I try my best to be articulate, it is so difficult to explain how grateful I am for all your help as a tutor and a mentor, but in the simplest terms – thank you so much. Before CL started tutoring me in Mathematics I was an underperforming student, always anxious about exams and study and very disorganised! However, with CL’s simple yet extremely effective methods of teaching, this all changed as I began topping my class, organising myself, achieving my academic goals and learnt how to control the environment around me rather than it control me and make me feel anxious. This effect extended and continued beyond my academics into my personal life, altering my entire outlook. It is difficult to articulate my transformation and my gratitude; CL’s assistance and influence goes above and beyond and my results speak for themselves!”

“I first came to CL with below average marks in my Year 11 Advanced Mathematics assessments. CL changed my work ethic almost instantaneously as he challenged me to achieve far better results and was a great source of inspiration. Soon I was motivated to reach my full potential not only in Mathematics but across all my subjects. CL helped me achieve results beyond my expectations which are enabling me to pursue my ambitions at The University of Sydney starting this year! CL was invaluable to me during HSC year – with the hard work came confidence and subsequently allowed me to really enjoy Advanced Maths. CL is an unparalleled tutor, his mentoring and friendship throughout this stressful year has been priceless. I cannot recommend him highly enough.”

“Having missed a lot of time at school in Year 11, I was falling far behind in my Advanced Maths class at the start of my HSC year. This caused a LOT of stress and anxiety for me. At this time I decided to find a Maths tutor and came across CL. CL’s teaching skills were second to none, he was always patient, clear, easy to understand and always fun! If it wasn’t for CL I probably would have dropped Maths all together but instead it quickly became my favourite subject and I ended up coming second in my year!”

“When I first started with CL I was barely scraping by in Mathematics. I had never really enjoyed Maths and in all honesty, I would much rather cut my arm off and watch it rot than do a Maths equation! Through Years 11 and 12 I was tutored by CL and I discovered I started to love Maths! I couldn’t wait to go Maths classes in school because suddenly everything made sense. And my teacher started to love me because I was interacting with her, doing all my homework, and answering questions. CL really helped me improve. Initially my marks were in the low 60s but after my confidence was up and my understanding was up I started getting marks in the high 80s. Not only was CL a great tutor, he made me laugh and the tutorials and sour squirms we shared will be a fond memory I will keep. Unfortunately CL doesn’t have me to annoy him anymore but luckily my sister will hopefully fill my shoes. Thank you so much CL!!!!!!!!”

“I started tutoring at the beginning of my HSC year with CL because with below average grades in my first General Mathematics assessment, I knew it was essential to find additional assistance to improve my grades in order to get into my desired university course. Immediately after starting the tutoring sessions I began to see a major improvement in my ability and confidence.  Furthermore, CL was a great supportive mentor and friend throughout my HSC year, whose tutoring significantly improved my final HSC results!”

“Seeking help and finding a quality tutor to guide you through your studies is a difficult task. This was the case until I met CL.  Before I met him I had no structure to my study and on top of that had negligible to no organisation. I was also failing Advanced Mathematics. I told CL my situation and he responded with the simple truth that he was prepared to go above and beyond if I committed to working. CL not only began tutoring me for Maths but also showed me how to plan and organise myself. He was more than just a tutor and became a mentor. When it came to studying and homework CL was always available to answer any question I was struggling with. This was only the start because when it came to understanding complex questions CL breaks down any question into its components to simplify what’s required to make formula application so, so simple. CL’s way of teaching made learning for me so much easier and faster to achieve. When it came close to exams CL was always able provide extra support whenever I required it. Post HSC, I look back and recognise and am proud my improvements.  I have far exceeded what I thought was possible and of course it would not have been achievable without CL’s close and never-ending support.”

“CL tutored me for my last year of high school in Year 12.  Before I started my Mathematics and Biology tutoring with CL, I was only a very average student. I knew that I possessed more potential than just being average and CL gave me the opportunity to prove it to myself. I had been previously tutored by many others but CL knew how to express his knowledge in a way that was easy for me to understand. CL was not only someone that just tutored me, he became someone that I could talk to and express and share my stresses about the HSC and he ultimately helped me get through it. Within 3 months of tutoring with CL, I became one of the top students in my classes; I was finally able to look at questions and understand what was the knowledge required to answer successfully.

CL taught me how to study Mathematics and Biology in a way that was time effective and in a way that knowledge and facts were easily understood and remembered. Without CL, I would still have been just the ‘average’ student with ‘average’ marks. Thankfully, he tutored me and I became way more than average. I would highly recommend tutoring with CL, but just a note of advice, CL can only open the door to success, only you get out what you put in. Once again CL, thanks for everything, including the truth.”

“At the beginning of my HSC year I had a very rocky start. My confidence was low, I was failing Advanced Mathematics and I just wanted the year to be over and done with. Second term arrived and nothing had changed. Then I met CL. When I finally agreed to receive help for my studies, I called CL to talk about how we were to begin tutoring. I had never ever spoken to someone who was so straight up and to the point. I was instantly impressed with how professional he was and excited to start tutoring. In our very first session I was amazed at the amount I was learning without even realising it! Lesson after lesson, my grades showed improvement and consistency. CL had not only helped my Mathematics improve but he assisted me with different ways that I could study for my other HSC subjects. Throughout the year, not only did CL prove to me that he was a fantastic tutor but also a really good friend. CL helped me when times were really tough; whenever I was down he would be there for me and pick me right up. CL will also push you to your limits because he cares enough to do so. One of the qualities of CL is that he will always give you the time of day to talk and be there for you when you need it. I just want to thank you CL for being such a great teacher and friend.”

“JD is a fantastic Physics tutor! I always enjoyed my sessions with him and came back feeling that concepts were clearer and that I had a greater understanding of the subject. His explanations of the content as well as his instruction in the use of language and structure of responses greatly improved my HSC results. He was invariably good fun and very motivational. I truly appreciate his help throughout the challenges of the HSC year and was pleased with my final exam results!”

“I began my tutoring with CL towards the end of my Year 11. When I first met CL, I was failing Advanced Maths, I was not studying and was being pushed by my school to drop down to General Maths as they told me that I would fail if I didn’t. My first impression of CL was a strong one; he told me straight up that if I worked hard and with focus then he would help me, BUT if I was going to slack off then he wouldn’t take me on as his student and would save my mother the expense. Before I started tutoring with CL, I had failed every single exam in the Advanced Maths course. CL made me continuously apply myself not only during our sessions but also at home…and I did it simply because I was concerned what punishments CL was capable of! But I have to admit, I really looked forward to going to our sessions, not just because I knew I would learn something new each time but the sessions were always relaxed and focused and whilst ensuring we’d get through everything required, we’d always manage to sneak in some awesome breakfast and even car talk! Once I started with CL, I continually noticed the difference in my Maths performance. I placed FIRST in my class in every exam and finished my Year 12 ranked FIRST in my class and in the top half of my year! I can honestly say that without CL, I would not have done as well as I did and it all came from hard work throughout the time with him; the only thing I regret is not starting earlier with him. CL is THE best tutor I have ever had, he will always be a friend to me and I will continue to refer him to anyone looking for a mentor who WILL help you achieve your academic goals whilst letting you enjoy French toast and a caramel milkshake!”

“When I first met CL it was clear to me that he wasn’t your average ‘run-in-the-mill’ tutor. My older brother Yohan had told me to expect something different, and so I was a bit apprehensive coming into our first session; a feeling that turned into fear upon my 30 minute late arrival; the first words he spoke to me were, “You forgot your phone didn’t you?” I started sessions with CL at a later stage then most other students, when my half-yearly exams were finished; and I was staring down the barrel of a below par result in my Trials. Once you get past his tough-guy look (CL was once a bad-ass bouncer), he proved to be incredibly accessible, friendly, and quite adept at creating an excellent learning environment. CL’s hardworking nature was a great example for me and the simple philosophy of his teaching and learning methods made it easy for me to understand and practice all of his academic advice. He has a way of bringing the best out of his students. Though his job description is as a tutor, CL provides so much more than that. He has become a good friend and mentor, helping me with things such as life issues and university scholarship applications (which ended up being successful!). In tangible terms, my Maths results improved by over 30% whilst I was with CL, leading to an ATAR/UAI of 95.35. Intangibly, the man has left me with so much more from his lessons than I ever expected; it is an experience that I am very thankful for.”

“JD, like CL, is a pretty funny guy. He’s also an outstanding English tutor. One of the first things you’ll notice about JD is his funny accent, as he hails from Somerset County in England. This instills in him a sense of patriotism for the “Motherland” and he still views Australia as nothing more than a “penal colony” with horrific weather. However more to the point, he engages in the “leisure activities of the more traditional English gentleman,” such as being terrible at football – but the most prominent of these is reading. JD has an incredible knowledge of literature, an asset that was hugely advantageous to my learning. His ideas were both strong and original; often covering new ground beyond was discussed in the classroom, helping me take my essay writing that step further, whilst extending my understanding of the course. JD’s patience and encouragement were always reassuring, and his constant availability, even during his exams, or the Architecture Revue, always helped ease the stress of impending trials or HSC exams. Under JD’s guidance, I achieved a Band 6 result in English with a score of 92%, my best result in the HSC. Whilst I had always considered myself a good English student, JD’s support was crucial to my HSC result. Sessions with him were always challenging as we sought to improve my essays and creative pieces (leading to some highly charged moments of inspiration), but always proved rewarding. In the end, I am better off academically for my time with JD, but have also gained a great friend.”

“I started tutoring with CL halfway through my Year 12 and saw almost immediate improvement in my Maths results. With CL’s help and encouragement, and his enjoyable, relaxed approach to tutoring…the study of Maths became quite simple and do-able…and I was able to top my school year in Mathematics (2 Unit) and place 3rd in 3 Unit (Maths Extension 1)! For my final HSC exams, I scored 95% in Maths and 47/50 in Maths Extension 1, which contributed to a UAI/ATAR score of 98.55!”

“As I struggled through Year 12 Mathematics, lagging behind, a suitable tutor for the topic was sought. Despite the short notice, Chin-Liang took up my cause without hesitation. Quickly, he introduced me to the techniques with which we would revise the subject, including simple goal establishment and an inclusive, methodological tutoring style which dissected the question into clear, easy steps. CL not only offered the methods to overcoming my Maths problems but also a genuine positive encouragement toward my studies, fuelled by his seemingly endless supply of coffee, chai lattes and fine cafe food. CL altered my perspective of Maths, as our sessions together quickly became amicable, interesting, and most importantly, helpful. Chin-Liang’s selfless dedication to his numerous students (willing to answer ANY question at ANY time) became clear in my final, vastly improved result (UAI/ATAR of 95.0), which would not have been possible without his involvement.”

“CL has not only worked wonders on my Mathematical abilities through his highly effective teaching methods, but has also become a great friend in the time I’ve known him. The life lessons he has imparted and his constant support through my HSC have been invaluable. CL makes Maths fun to the point where you can spend a lesson with him and by the end of it feel like you’ve done nothing but laugh when in actuality you are getting a quality education. However, what I truly value more than the excellent HSC results CL helped me achieve is the friendship he has shown me. I cannot fully put into words the extent of what CL has done for me. I could not recommend him more highly as a tutor, mentor and friend.”

“I moved up to a higher level Maths class in Year 9, and suddenly I went from being at the top of my class, managing the work easily and mucking around in class to crying in tests despite devoting nearly all my study time to my Maths. I started seeing CL, and one of his biggest impacts was dispelling my fear of getting a question wrong, which made the learning process a hell of a lot easier! He made it very clear the whole way through my high school years that it’s learning for learning’s sake. CL also taught me that, despite the hype about rankings and UAIs, the most important part of true results is how you and you alone do, which represented a real comfort and reassurance during the arduous Year 12 of the whole HSC campaign. Also, CL is always a friend (yet one who opens a can of whoopass without a moment’s hesitation when required) during sessions and outside of sessions. That makes it that much easier to drag yourself out of bed in the morning when there’s a friendly face and a hot coffee waiting.”

CL has this amazing ability to break even the most complicated theories down into simply steps and THEN manages to convince you into understanding that it actually is that easy. The confidence boost is extraordinary! I would have long ago ditched Maths if it hadn’t been for CL’s patient and zen-like nature towards my learning and progress. His personal interest in his student’s development amazes me, as he endeavours to personally aid his students towards success with anything he is able to help with, i.e. answering your call at the unearthly hour of 2am just before an assessment to help you figure out what ‘x’ is! Just for the life lessons themselves, I would recommend CL as a tutor without any reservations. His Maths skills are exceptionally good. I don’t doubt for a second that if he wanted to, he could count to infinity.”

CL started tutoring me when I was midway through Year 11. At that point in time, I was really an average student and my results constantly varied due to my constant sporting commitments and a lack of set routine for study. Initially I knew that I needed tuition but always dreaded how boring and monotonous it would become. However, with CL it was different! His positive attitude and genuine care about my results motivated me to continually revise and study; I finally had someone who could give me clear and simple explanations! My end-of-year exam results clearly reflected the work I did with CL – I received the highest mark for Maths, and also significantly improving my Biology performance, ranking 8th in my year! CL is a great tutor and I highly recommend him to anyone seeking help with their studies. CL has become a life-long friend and my tuition experience with him as changed and improved my attitude and approach to work in general.”

I began tutoring with CL at the end of my Year 11, at the point which I had already talked myself into thinking that my Maths was never going to improve. To be honest, I started tutoring not only because I didn’t understand the content of the subject, but also for another set of expectations for me to strive towards fulfilling. With CL, he was able to provide a disciplined and effective mode of studying that enabled me to improve overall in my general studies. He was able to put things into perspective, not only with Maths but for many things that I have been able to apply to many aspects of my life.”

“I began tutoring with Jonny/JD in the final term of my HSC year, when Physics had well and truly become a major source of anxiety for me. Our sessions certainly left me well-equipped with the nuts and bolts of the HSC Physics course – both the content of the course and the skills needed to communicate it to teachers and examiners. However, the most valuable think I absorbed was definitely Jonny’s practical attitude towards studying. Our sessions helped me to see more effective and efficient ways of studying for my Physics exam, which came in handy for many other subjects as well. As soon as I could see the improvement in my own practices, I overcame a lot of my initial reluctance towards this subject and found it much easier to get into a study “rhythm” (just in time too!!). After all this, I greatly improved on my in-school performance; I achieved the highest HSC Physics mark in my school, and Physics was one of my best results in the final HSC exams.”

“I first met CL about half way through Year 11 at the point where Maths suddenly enters a much more complex and confusing subject matter, unfortunately making it much easier to fall behind. From this moment on I saw CL nearly every week up to the day before my final exam. My reason for having a Maths tutor was to provide another source of answers – however my sessions with CL went far beyond this. CL introduced to me a simple, yet logical and effective approach to Maths in which each question was broken down into a template of straightforward steps. My time spent with CL ensured that this practical method became my own, providing not only great benefit to my Maths, but also influencing how I approached my other subjects. CL was fully committed to my progress, available at anytime and always ready to answer any question big or small. CL has a great ability to eliminate the uncertainties of Maths.”

After three years, it is now time to say goodbye with my most heartfelt thanks to the best tutor, mentor and friend anyone could ever hope for, want and need. I am of course referring to Chin-Liang who has guided me through my School Certificate as well as my HSC which by its very nature has not always been easy. CL even managed to make it enjoyable while spoiling me with significant samples of hot chocolates in many of Glebe’s cafes. CL has always shown me unwavering support and given me both tremendous encouragement and help to instil in me a belief in my own abilities. He provided the means for me to understand the work and more importantly a simplified step by step guide for just about everything that was fail-proof. When I did stuff up an exam, he simply and constantly reminded me that there will always be another exam, and of course there always was another chance to prove myself to the more important person – myself.

Many of us felt that he would have more time in his life if he would cancel his infamous Sunday night HSC sessions! If we rang or sent off emails with any and all of our Maths problems, he would answer them almost immediately, unless he though that our own exploration in learning would lead us into the answer ourselves.

Chin-Liang expects nothing less than total dedication to your school tasks and can be unforgiving when you don’t put the effort in that he expects but CL leads by example, and asks nothing less of himself. To this end I have seen him help myself and others when he was time poor and yet he always puts his students ahead of everything else. Many of us felt that he would have had more time in his life if he would cancel all his infamous Sunday night HSC sessions! If we rang or sent off emails with any and all of our Maths problems, he would answer them almost immediately, unless he thought that our own exploration in learning would lead us into the answer ourselves.

While I have said goodbye to him as my Maths tutor, we have continued to keep in touch as friends. CL continues to be involved with my well-being and progress at university, and I will always welcome the chance to have a conversation with him because you will never know where it leads in his most interesting life of learning and living!

CL supported both myself and my peers through all aspects of our HSC which whilst that may not sound that taxing to anyone else…when he’s dealing with about 9 Year 12 students all under enormous emotional and physical strain and is still willing to lend an ear and wise words (and more often than not a shoulder)… the appreciation and impact CL makes on your life is phenomenal.

I spent the first two weeks of Year 11 in tears because I thought that the Maths I was doing was just too hard. It seemed exponentially harder than Year 10 work and I simply couldn’t cope. I was wrong. From the first session with CL things began to change. It wasn’t simply that I was going through the class work more slowly or that we were breaking it down so I could understand the work better, it was that he was encouraging me to acknowledge some thing in myself that I didn’t think I was capable of and that was, in fact, doing well.

Right away CL lets you know that the work you’re doing is purely for your own benefit. Not your parents, not your teachers and especially not for him. His method of teaching was completely different to that of my Maths teacher at school, which threw me at first. He would do things in a completely different way. However, I soon came to trust his method of teaching. What CL wants you to do is simple – do work and lots of it! Through repetition and familiarity of the questions you’ll feel confident and prepared and hopefully won’t stress. Compared to my class teacher, CL really does have time for you individually, to explain and then re-explain everything you didn’t understand in class.

During Year 12, the most beneficial sessions for me were CL’s HSC group sessions, which were two hours straight of HSC questions. This was very important, as it forced me to do work I might not have otherwise been motivated to do on my. Even though CL always said that I was capable of anything I didn’t believe him at the time. However, again I was wrong.

I started Year 12 thinking the HSC was some huge and scary thing, but after I got used to the work load and assessments it really didn’t seem that bad. When it came to my Biology Trial I thought I didn’t really need to study (and if any of you are trying that approach believe me it doesn’t work!!!). I ended up getting 47% for my test.

I then went and got tutoring from CL who made me realise I needed to get my act together (or in his words pull my finger out of my ass!). It was difficult at first and there were a few times that I probably wanted to punch him, but he truly motivated me and I was dedicated to doing well. CL taught me how to study for Biology and worked with me to bring my 47 up to a final HSC mark of 88%… I was so happy.

Overall I had pretty good rankings in all my subjects and when it came to the HSC exams I really knuckled down and worked hard. My consistency and the self discipline CL taught me really paid off in the end and got me a UAI score of 95.7%.

I was terrified the first time my mum suggested I go to a Maths tutor. Initially, I didn’t like the idea of needing a bit of extra help for a subject I had always done relatively well in. After my first session with CL, I realised that his aim wasn’t just to give me extra work on top of what school already required of me; he was also helping me find confidence in myself and in the work I was doing. Admittedly I wasn’t a shy or insecure person…however, with CL’s encouragement and guidance I was able to hone in on a goal to strive towards throughout my HSC.

CL’s main principle of working for yourself and not for one’s parents, teachers, friends or even for him supported my own values which I had been attempting to follow, but was still struggling with. With these values in mind, CL became a trusted advisor and friend; far beyond the role of a mere Maths tutor. His method of teaching was so different from those of my classroom teachers, in that he had the time and patience to re-explain each concept until I could recite it inversely. Though it was tough and stressful at times (especially when the enormity of an assessment was blown out of proportion by stress) his forthright approach to teaching made me want to exceed any expectations I had previously placed on myself.

As my confidence grew, so did my results, which improved and increased dramatically. This contrasted with being a B grade average Maths student in my junior years and also getting only 68% in my first Preliminary HSC Maths test, where I was shattered and my confidence dropped. My final HSC Maths result was 82% and contributed to my UAI score of 93.4%! I mention this score because it was with CL’s encouragement and persistent reminders of ‘every point counts this year’ that helped me to push myself just that bit further, even when pressure and anxiety of the seeming finality of the HSC itself threatened to overwhelm me.

Tutoring with CL was the best decision I made throughout my schooling years. Unfortunately, I commenced my tutoring late in year 11, but as soon as sessions commenced I started to notice huge changes in both my grades and my work ethic. With all the pressures brought on by the HSC, having CL as a mentor and a friend gave me great advantages especially with regards to the way I approached my management of assignments and exams. I was tutored by CL in both Biology and Mathematics, but it was specifically with Mathematics that I found myself succeeding at and really enjoying as a subject (which i never thought possible). The group sessions organised by CL also created a great opportunity for his students who were studying the same subject to get together and collaborate as a team.

I cannot stress strongly enough how much I thank CL for all the hard work and time he dedicated to my learning and educational development. His help during my HSC has excelled me into a degree and changed the way I engage and interact with my studies. It was hard work, but when taking on any subject with the aim to succeed in it, you really can’t expect anything less. In fact, it was CL who made the whole experience so much easier.

An improvement from 52% to a final exam mark of 91% in my HSC Maths…..I think it’s fair to say that the results speak for themselves. I had undertaken tutoring fairly late in my HSC journey, truly believing that performing well in my whole HSC was in real doubt. But as soon as I started really listening to CL’s teaching for my Maths subject, and also to CL’s guidance & advice, I realised that tutoring is more than just a job to him, it is beyond doubt genuinely sincere.

CL wishes for each of his students with the intent and drive to succeed and achieve and at times, more than you do…bizarrely enough. My personal struggle with Maths was tricky insofar as to understanding correctly the origins of problems and what each question was actually testing. Tutoring with the head Powdermonkey taught me to deconstruct the appearance of complexity, and thus the story of my progression starts from there. Since starting with CL, I learned to discipline the approach of my study in such a way to ultimately achieve a HSC UAI of 94.75! The lessons I had learned during the year of myself and everything in general, was a way that convinced me through my education with CL. With worldly introductions to chai lattes and on occasions some pretty intense sessions with CL, they really were and still are, more than well worth it. Personally having ‘endured’ the head Powdermonkey Chin-Liang as both my tutor and mentor, my advice to you is simple…listen to his advice.

Before I started tutoring with CL, at the beginning of Year 11, Maths as a school subject was my last priority and I hardly spent any time on it. I was just passing my exams but basically fluking it; I hardly understood anything and couldn’t really be bothered. From the beginning, CL taught me how to study Maths both effectively and efficiently and how to manage it with all of my other subjects. CL never had problems repeating or rewording explanations until I understood and even after I said I did, he would still repeat it just to make sure I possessed true understanding of the concept.

My first exam result after starting tutoring with CL was a mark 65% … which was a significant improvement in a short space of time! Throughout my Year 12 terms I consistently scored 85% and above for my Maths tests and assessments. And for the most important exam, the HSC… I achieved 90% for the exam with an overall mark of 91% which I was seriously impressed with!

Sessions with CL…they were always in a relaxing environment, whether it be a quiet café or Fisher Library at Sydney University. Whenever I was way too stressed, he would be able to place everything back into perspective for me, usually after some tears! He was never too serious to pay me out but it was all lightheartedly so if I was stressed going into a session, I certainly wasn’t after tutoring! Tutoring was always rewarding, I never left feeling like a problem hadn’t been explained properly.

But the most important thing that helped me through Year 12 was that CL actually cared about how I was doing, instead of just rocking up to tutoring every week, answering questions and helping me with problems. When you have a teacher who you know cares about your results and wellbeing, it makes a huge difference, especially during the HSC when you need heaps of support.

Before tutoring with Clem, I hated Chemistry and pretty much failed everything in it. Since starting tutoring with Clem, my understanding of Chemistry has increased unbelievably. Instead of having to struggle to understand Chemistry, Clem helped me to better understand the concepts involved and apply them to the relevant examples we studied.

Clem had an answer to any question I asked and was never unwilling to repeat an explanation until I understood. I could never remember what eutrophication was and every week Clem would ask me what it was and explained it until I had the best answer I could. Regardless of how stupid the question would be, he was always willing to explain it in any way possible for me to understand.

Since tutoring with Clem, my results have improved dramatically. From failing most assessment tasks and being ranked towards the bottom of the class, I achieved full marks in one major assessment task, finished the year being ranked 7th out of 23, and received an overall HSC mark of 80, which I never could have imagined achieving. All thanks to Clem even if he doesn’t accept it.

Clem’s caring nature always made it easy to enjoy tutoring whilst learning. His knowledge of Chemistry is unbelievable and his love for Science is amazing.

Even though I haven’t known Lloyd a long time, from our first Chemistry session to the last, Lloyd has been kind, extremely helpful and really caring about my understanding of the course. Chemistry in the past hasn’t been my favourite subject, mainly because it never really made sense. Since Lloyd started tutoring me, it has become a lot more enjoyable and easy to understand. Lloyd always makes sure I understand everything, and repeats everything until I do and that is exactly what makes it easier.

Lloyd’s encouragement, friendly attitude and knowledge of the Chemistry course have helped me revise and relearn from a new perspective some basic elements of Chemistry and the whole first core topic, as well as the basic principles of the next topic. As I look back at the disappointing results of my first HSC Chemistry assessment mark, which took place before I started with Lloyd, the understanding that he has given me showed me how I could have better answered the questions. Without this level of understanding in the past, I didn’t really understand how I could have better answered the questions.

As CL said (paraphrased a bit) good people don’t come along that often, and even after the short time Lloyd has been tutoring me, I’ve seen him as someone who has set examples for me to follow in his work, attitude and personality.

I find it difficult to put into words how much CL helped me in my final years at high school and for my HSC. In a nutshell…CL changed me both academically and mentally as a person. When I first met CL I was really taken aback by his brutal honesty but was more blown away by his passion for what he does. CL has an incredible ability to pass on knowledge and explain things in ways I could actually understand. I went from being lost in both my HSC Biology and Maths curriculum to being able to understand what I was meant to learn and this then allowed me to get involved in the subjects.

CL turned me from being an uninterested and disorganized student to one that was interested and actually excited about my learning. Over my time with CL we shared many hilarious moments and at the same time managed to consume an amazing amount of banana bread and coffee. I think perhaps I enjoyed our sessions in Glebe cafes and the banana bread and coffee too much….as he then moved our sessions to another of his favourite locations, Fisher Library at Sydney University…where it wasn’t long before I soon found another coffee stall!

I had so many funny times with CL…little white dogs and contaminated tables come to mind, but if I try to write about them they would probably just get lost in translation and come out weird! The point is though, I learnt a great deal, achieved my goals and enjoyed doing it! CL became more than a tutor, he became a friend and a mentor.

I find it quite difficult to express my gratitude for your help this year CL, you have been so much more then a humble Maths tutor. Every session we had together would push me to try harder and your constant guidance enabled me to get a raw mark of 70 in my final HSC exam, the highest mark I’ve ever received in my two years of doing 2 unit Mathematics.

You have been a constant friend, and mentor – not just for Maths and the HSC, but for life itself. I remember turning up to a session quite down on myself after my Trials, and with your guidance and faith in me you gave me the confidence and demeanor to push on, try my hardest and to get a mark I deserved.

Thank you for everything CL you have been both mentor and friend to me.

I started tutoring with CL for Mathematics when I was in Year 9. I soon included tutoring in two more subjects of Biology and Chemistry in my later years of high school. When I look back now at my tutoring experiences over the past few years there are so many different emotions and challenges I faced, however I was always able to overcome them with the help of CL.

With CL, the tutoring experience became a very personal time, I was always so comfortable because CL has this amazing ability to read people, and when I was stressed out or I seriously couldn’t handle a session, he knew, and it was an order of iced chocolates and chill out time straight away. However, the work we did DID pay off… I believe my sessions were so successful because CL was so involved and really made a point of caring about me and how I did. Having someone believe in you makes all the difference, I never wanted to let CL down, so it’s much easier to push yourself when exam time comes around.

There is no doubt in my mind that without the help, advice and friendship CL willingly gave me, and I’m sure all his students, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve as much I have or thought I could for my HSC.

Thanks again, and again and again CL!

Having being tutored by CL from Year 9 to Year 12… I believe I understand the scope of his tutoring. I have had multiple tutors in my school years, but none has stuck like him. Having CL as my Mathematics tutor allowed me to go from a very convoluted image of the subject to achieving a final HSC Maths mark of 86%. The truth was that I was slightly disappointed with this mark, as it was greatly dragged down by my awful Trials exam. Despite this, it is important to note that without CL, I wouldn’t have gained the confidence to believe myself able to achieve any higher than this! CL allowed me to function academically from a higher standard.

In the middle of Year 11, Biology was amazingly hard for me and I kept getting in the 70s for my exams. However, CL’s consistent and insightful explanations on Biological concepts allowed for the topic to become simplified and even better – understandable and even interesting! In the end I topped my year in the Trials for Biology and I achieved a final HSC Biology mark of 93%!

Admittedly, at times I thought CL to be a bit over-bearing in terms as a tutor, acting sometimes as a life coach additionally, and being very persistent and harsh about work and having many tutoring sessions. But in the end it paid off big time as I exceeded all expectations and received a UAI score of 99.55 and got into the course I wanted – Arts (Psychology)!

CL showed me how an ethos of persistence and hard work pays off!

Chin-Liang is more than a tutor to any of his students. He is someone that genuinely cares about you and someone who will go to enormous lengths to help you; even in ways unrelated to the subjects he tutors. CL has a great skill of being able to motivate his students to go to unbelievable efforts to achieve their best. A few weeks after my first session with CL, I found myself staying up to 3.30am in the summer holidays to do Maths exercises!

Before having CL as a tutor I barely did my homework and now I was staying up to the early hours of the morning voluntarily working my Maths! My marks increased from the 50s to be consistently in the nineties. I went from being in the bottom half of my class to coming first in assessments and being ranked consistently in the top three students of my year. CL is a fantastic tutor and I would recommend him to anyone who desires to be their best

Chin-Liang is just one of those people who excels at whatever he does: from tutoring Maths, to breaking into cars (at the owner’s request of course). He is truly a gifted and unique individual.

With a year to go before the HSC, Chin-Liang as my Maths tutor became a catalyst for a total transformation in the way I viewed work and study. As my respect for him increased… the desire to do more than the bare minimum began to permeate through not only my study of Maths but through all my subjects. CL is not someone who coddles his students; he won’t do the work for you. The idea of doing group Maths sessions at 10 o’clock on a Sunday night would have sounded ridiculous to me before I met CL, yet somehow he uncovered the motivation in myself and his other students to willingly accept what in any other context would seem like torture. Whilst I remain unsure of the exact mechanics of this change, the simple facts of going from 50-60% in school assessments to a HSC mark of 91%, combined with a place on the state Honour Roll, stand testament to the efficacy of CL’s work

When I started tutoring with CL at the beginning of Year 12, I was given a wake up call. He taught me discipline in regards to developing and following a regimented study plan not only for my Maths but also my other subjects. The main thing that impressed me with CL’s tutoring methods was that he focused upon the preparation rather than the results… which as a consequence made my tutoring sessions with him a lot more comfortable and hence more effective in raising my test marks from 60% to the 80% mark in only a short period of time. I would recommend CL to any other student with the utmost confidence.

The first thing I can remember Chin-Liang saying to me was “we are going to do Maths problems until you bleed”. He was somewhat intimidating and his confident manner and eerie stare had me squirming in my seat, at least to begin with. I began getting tutoring from CL about a third into my HSC year when I was struggling, but within a few weeks I was seeing a change in my fortunes and found myself competing with the best kids in my class for marks. CL can break down even the most complex problems into simple parts, making them easier to digest, and will go through things as many times as you need, until he is sure that you understand. Not only did CL improve my marks, he also managed to make me enjoy Maths, something that earlier in the year I would not have thought possible. CL is not only a great Maths tutor but also a great person, and he genuinely cares about the results of his students, something I think is rare for teachers. I would not hesitate in recommending CL as a Maths tutor

Chin-Liang managed to show me a new way of approaching my 2 Unit Maths course which suited my way of learning. Throughout the last two years of school he was a great source of motivation and continued to encourage me to do my best. I was thrilled with my final result and I couldn’t have achieved it without his persistence and companionship. Thank you so much for all your help. You gave me the confidence and knowledge of Maths, and alternate ways of thinking, that got me the marks I’m so thrilled with

With Chin Liang’s help since Year 8 through to the end of Year 12, my marks have seen a great improvement through the years. I averaged 40% in exams before I met Chin Liang; with his help and guidance, my marks improved and I began averaging in the 80’s for my assessments. I have just completed the HSC and have received my marks, which are fantastic. With Chin Liang’s help, my Mathematics mark was 80%, a Band 5. Chin Liang explains concepts in various ways, which are easy to understand, and he makes learning enjoyable. Chin Liang will explain all questions needed, and persist to do so until it is clear and simple for you to understand. Chin Liang has helped me over the years achieve these great results, which can be seen in my final HSC mark. I would recommend Chin Liang to anyone that has difficulty in Maths.

My last year of tutoring with CL has seen my marks go from 50% to 90% in 2 Unit Mathematics. Chin Liang makes Maths interesting without any ignotum-per-ignotious, he exudes Zen-like simplicity. Chin Liang has the power to keep you ahead of the game.

Chin Liang is definitely the best Maths tutor I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. After only a few lessons, not only did my grades improve, but so did my enthusiasm for the subject! CL has a special gift of making Maths fun, easy, and making all your goals 100% achievable.

These are my thoughts on CL as a tutor in a nutshell…Chin-Liang tutored me in Maths and Science, and the best thing about him was that he actually knew everything he talked about and really cared. I always had a fairly apathetic view of studies and he changed that by being disturbingly interested in the scientific world. I give him questions I can’t do and he goes of and spends hours with his friends doing them…I’m serious! The guy’s a freak! Chin-Liang seems against the notion of spoonfeeding so I never felt I was cheating, and he tried to teach me how things worked as best he could. He seems to be more interested in my work than even I am, so I think that is probably the best thing about him.

I took Chin Liang on as my Maths tutor about 6 months before my HSC and it was definitely the best thing I could have ever done to improve my knowledge of Maths! Chin Liang helped me to disentangle the big mess in my head and make sense of what I was learning.

In Years 9 and 10, I was in Advanced Mathematics, but somehow I was always in the bottom half of my class. My main problem was that during tests, I would panic and forget everything I had learnt…it also didn’t help that I only started studying one or two nights before the test! Towards the end of last year, I noticed that two of my very good friends were doing extremely well in their Advanced Maths; their final positions at the end of the year were 6th and 7th out of their entire year while I came 21st in mine! I asked them how they were studying for tests, and it was then I discovered they had the same tutor, and he had taught them the way to prepare for tests. I thought I really need this tutor for next year, especially since I was going to be doing 3 Unit Maths!! I met Chin Liang, and straight up he told me why and how he teaches, what his approach was, and I was very happy with what he had to say! We started our tutoring sessions, and gradually my marks kept getting higher and higher; I started the year with a mark of 56%, and recently on my last test, I got 90%, the 3rd top mark in my class and in my year!! It felt great going into a test full of confidence, and knowing what to expect. The main thing I learnt from CL is that when you have tests, you shouldn’t have to study, you should already know it, like second nature! I thank him greatly for his knowledge! He has such a busy schedule, but always has time to manage to fit all his students’ problems into his day! CL has changed the way I look at Maths, and I hope to continue doing 3 Unit maths for my HSC!

CL is the best tutor that I have ever had. 2002 will be my second year with Chin Liang as my Maths tutor. Within one year, I have already seen a big difference in my grades. Chin Liang is a fun guy, and I recommend him to anyone who doesn’t enjoy Maths, as you will after a few sessions with CL.

He is a man with so many talents, and knows so many ways to solve problems, but best of all he makes learning fun!!! I was introduced to Chin Liang by a friend. Janek had been tutoring with Chin Liang for two months, and almost everyday came to me and told me how wonderful his tutor was. Now that Chin Liang has taught me I also personally know how wonderful his help is. Chin Liang taught me for ¾ of a year in which I excelled. I’m now enrolled for Year 7 in the selective stream at the Sydney Secondary College in Leichhardt. Thank you Chin Liang!!!!!!!!!

November 2001Chin Liang, or CL as he is known to me expects his students to put a certain amount of effort into their studies so that they can achieve the marks they want. The most important thing that CL taught me is that there needs to be communication in order for me to benefit from his tutoring. If I don’t understand something then I ask. CL helps me with whatever part of my schooling that I need extra help with and he gives me advice to better my studies. He is also very easy to get along with which makes studying less stressful! When exam time comes around and I start to doubt my abilities, CL ensures that my preparation is thorough in the lead up. He makes me understand that the foundation is what’s most important, and also making me realise that a test mark is just a test mark. As he says, there is always going to be a tomorrow, and the sun will still shine and there is nothing to worry about. Chin Liang is an exceptional tutor who I couldn’t ask any more of and I am confident that he will guide me well through my senior years.

The best, or worst thing about Chin Liang is that he takes his teaching very seriously. He is genuinely dedicated to helping you achieve a goal. If you’re not determined to improve, then don’t even bother. However, if you are, then I can guarantee that Chin Liang will be of tremendous help. He explains things clearly, doesn’t make you feel like an idiot even if what you’re missing is obvious, and understands the importance of the fundamental basics. He’s also aware that Maths may not be the centre of your world, and so encourages you to work at reasonable and consistent levels.

As single entities, Chin Liang and James are on the whole ‘nice’ people…together they’re a mixture of formulas and solutions, all right, all valid, but often different – which unbeknownst to them, provides a shitload of entertainment! CL’s dedication to his students is the reason you’ll love him. No matter how dumb you think you are, (as I often feel where Mathematics is concerned), he’ll give you a slap on the shoulder – a payout or two – and then he’ll give you a detailed solution, so you’ll never need a slap on the shoulder again!

I had always thought that Maths was one of those subjects that no matter how hard someone tried, they could never make it interesting. Chin Liang proved me wrong. Chin Liang’s method of teaching is unlike any other that I’ve come across. He taught me that like any other subject, Maths can be made fun. He explained everything in such a simple, straightforward and yet effective way. But most importantly, Chin Liang taught me to enjoy Maths, and that’s something I never thought was possible. As well as being a great tutor, Chin Liang has also been, and shall remain to be a great friend. It goes without saying that without his enthusiasm, guidance and support, I would never have achieved the marks that I did. Thanks mate.

Chin Liang took me from an average mark of 60% in 2 Unit Mathematics at the beginning of Year 12, to 84% and third placing overall in my final year at Hunters Hill High. Chin Liang takes pride in seeing his students reach the highest level they can potentially reach.

In the beginning of 1999, Chin Liang took me on as one of his senior students. At that point in time, I was facing one of the most daunting paths I had ever come across, which was successfully completing my last two years of high school. Under his guidance, my marks improved dramatically, and it wasn’t long before my level of confidence was up and I was soaring towards the top of my class. Without Chin Liang’s guidance and support, I know I wouldn’t have achieved the level of understanding and personal satisfaction as I did. His method of teaching and explanations are unlike any other I have come across in the past. Through teamwork and dedication, he inspired me and my friends to stick at it for the long haul, and we achieved our goals. His enthusiasm encouraged me to push myself in not only Maths, but my other areas of study. Thanks!!

On beginning tuition with Chin Liang, I immediately improved my results. Going from a failing student to achieving marks of 70% to 80% within only the first few weeks of lessons, this improvement restored inspiration, confidence and pride in my work. Not being a naturally strong mathematician, I found Chin Liang’s disciplined teaching methods appealing as I have a tendency to be lazy; his methods applied not only to Mathematics, but also to all facets of study and even my personal life. Complementing Chin Liang’s disciplined approach, his caring personality shone through, as he would go above and beyond his duty to maintain my improvement and success. On a personal level, I found Chin Liang to be a great friend, confidant and teacher. If I ever needed a person to talk to, even about personal problems, I could count on him to listen, and if he could, offer his advice. If you are thinking of starting tuition with Chin Liang, remember that commitment is your key to success, and expectation leads to disappointment. You could have the greatest teachers in the world, but the results flow directly from yourself.
